Disarray allegedly prevails in the education sector, according to the PLQ's declaration
In the realm of Quebec politics and education, several significant events have transpired over the past few days.
On Tuesday, the STM, in collaboration with Mayor Valérie Plante, unveiled the names of the future stations along the blue line metro. Meanwhile, the Legault government is preparing for a ministerial reshuffle, scheduled for Wednesday, marking the first such event since 2021.
In the education sector, Eric Pronovost, the president of the Federation of Support Staff in Education (FPSS-CSQ), has expressed concerns about the current back-to-school environment, stating that it is one of the worst in many years. Pronovost noted that students are clashing with each other due to increased pressure and burden on the staff, and his members are increasingly facing violence. Moreover, he mentioned that the lack of resources in the school network is making things worse.
The 540 million dollar reinvestment announced by Minister Drainville this summer was a response to an initial request for school service centers to reduce their expenses by 570 million this year. However, despite this reinvestment, educational support resources have reportedly diminished, according to Pronovost.
In a related development, the Liberal Party of Quebec's spokesperson on education, Madwa-Nika Cadet, estimated that a potential replacement of Bernard Drainville as Minister of Education would not significantly change the situation.
In the political arena, the Legault government has not announced any replacements for Ministers André Lamontagne and Suzanne Roy, who have confirmed they will not run in the 2026 elections.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has called for the abolition of the temporary foreign worker program, citing youth unemployment as a reason. A survey reveals that 44% of Canadians share this sentiment.
On the climate front, Justin Trudeau had committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% to 45% compared to 2005. Mark Carney, however, did not confirm whether he will meet the 2030 climate targets.
Lastly, the Bourassa-Sauvé MNA noted that Minister Drainville does not have the confidence of the network, and that problems will persist without a "180-degree turn" in the government's "orientations." As of now, the identity of the potential new Minister of Education has yet to be officially announced.
