Discourse on Authentic-Looking Food Replics in Japan: Unveiling Japan's Amazing Edible Imitations
The Gallery on Level 2 is hosting an exciting new exhibition, titled "Looks Delicious! Exploring Japan's Food Replica Culture". This is the first U.S. exhibition dedicated to shokuhin sampuru, ultra-realistic food replicas that have become a cultural icon in Japan.
Originating before 1868 when produce vendors displayed samples of vegetables in season, food replicas have evolved significantly over the years. In the early 20th century, they were first made from wax to showcase unfamiliar dishes in department store restaurants. Today, they are crafted from durable resins and have become a beloved part of Japanese dining culture, serving as a universal language that removes language barriers in dining and makes menus accessible to people from all backgrounds.
The exhibition runs from Thursday, September 18, 2025, to Sunday, January 25, 2026. Visitors can expect to explore seven themed areas, learn about the history and craftsmanship of food replicas, and create their own bentoΜ to photograph and share.
Admission to the exhibition is free, and hours are Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The exhibition is closed on Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 27, 2025) and Christmas (Thursday, December 25, 2025).
A special guest speaker, Nakai Takashi, will share insights into the process and cultural significance of food replicas. Nakai Takashi, born in 1979 and originally from Tokyo, has over 15 years of experience in public relations and new business development. He graduated from Hosei University in 2004 and is currently engaged in legacy succession and organisational transformation. Nakai Takashi's presentation time at the event is at 3:00 PM.
Iwasaki Takizo founded Iwasaki Co., Ltd. in 1932 and created the first official food replica, a commemorative omelet. Today, the use of food replicas has expanded beyond restaurants to industries such as hospitals, schools, and manufacturing.
The exhibition encourages visitors to check the website for updates and additional information. Participants are also encouraged to visit the "Looks Delicious! Exploring Japan's Food Replica Culture" exhibition before the program.
