May 2024: 'Swimming in the Dark' by Tomasz Jedrowski

For May, Dua Lipa has chosen 'Swimming in the Dark' by Tomasz Jedrowski. Set in New York City in the 1920s and '30s, the story of a Manhattan financier and his high society wife is told through four 'books' - a novel, a manuscript, a memoir, and a journal. The strange atmospheric pace of the novel doesn't let up, and Dua found herself on the edge of her seat from beginning to end.

April 2024: 'Crying in H Mart' by Michelle Zauner

In April, the Service95 Book Club pick is 'Crying in H Mart' by Michelle Zauner. Michelle is the uber-cool singer and guitarist of the American cult indie band Japanese Breakfast. This memoir is a vivid portrait of growing up Korean-American, losing her mother, and finding her voice. Dua was moved by Michelle's raw and precious story.

March 2024: 'Trust' by Hernan Diaz

For March, Dua chose 'Trust' by Hernan Diaz. This novel is about a terrible and tragic war in the United Kingdom that many people today are too young to even remember. The story takes place over just one week, during which we learn almost nothing about the young protagonist, Alex. Dua found the book to be a masterclass in the art of the 'non-fiction novel'.

February 2024: 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini

In February, Dua introduced 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini. This is an illuminating story of the cultural and political history of Afghanistan, rich with the textures of daily life. Dua reflected that she first read the book just after the return of the Taliban in 2021 when Afghanistan dominated headlines around the world.

January 2024: 'The Guest' by Emma Cline

To kick off the new year, Dua chose 'The Guest' by Emma Cline. This novel is about a terrible and tragic war in the United Kingdom that many people today are too young to even remember. The story is infused with love - between fractured families, teenage lovers, and heroic characters whose friendship resonated with Dua deeply.

As the year comes to a close, Dua shared a list of five books she plans to gift: 'Brightly Shining' by Ingvild Rishøi, 'James' by Percival Everett, 'Tenth Of December' by George Saunders, 'In The Distance' by Hernan Diaz, and 'The Last Dream' by Pedro Almodóvar.

July 2024: 'Noughts & Crosses' by Malorie Blackman

For July, Dua chose 'Noughts & Crosses' by Malorie Blackman. This is a coming-of-age love story set against the brutal political backdrop of Communist Poland in the 1980s. Dua found the book to be pacey, romantic, tortured, and enlightening.

June 2024: 'Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland' by Patrick Radden Keefe

In June, the Service95 Book Club pick was 'Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland' by Patrick Radden Keefe. This book is a masterclass in the art of the 'non-fiction novel', burning with a quiet rage at the persecution the LGBTQ+ community in Poland has suffered for decades and continues to fight against today.

November 2024: 'On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous' by Ocean Vuong

In November, the Service95 Book Club pick was 'On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous' by Ocean Vuong. This is a book about loss that is also about love, South Korea that is also about West Coast small-town America, and a story that is both beautiful and heartbreaking.

The Service95 Book Club represents diverse global voices and tells powerful stories spanning fiction, memoir, and manifesto. Each pick is a book to savor, to enjoy every word, and to hook readers from beginning to end.
