In a surprising turn of events, national basketball coach Alex Mumbrú has handed over the role of head coach for the remaining European Championship (EM) games to his assistant, Alan Ibrahimagic. This decision was announced by Mumbrú in a meeting with his players and the support team on Monday.

Mumbrú, who has led the German national team to five consecutive wins in the preliminary round, has been dealing with health issues. He spent six days in the hospital in Tampere, Finland, after being hospitalized on August 25 due to acute abdomen. Despite his return to the bench last Saturday in the round of 16 against Portugal (85:58), Mumbrú had not seemed fully fit, leading to this decision.

The announcement was made in response to Mumbrú's physical condition, and the decision was made with the support of the coaching staff. Under the leadership of Ibrahimagic, the German national team advanced to the knockout round as group winners. Ibrahimagic will now take over as head coach during the games.

The quarter-final against Slovenia will take place on Wednesday at 8 pm (RTL and MagentaSport), with the venue set in Riga. The German team will be without Mumbrú on the sidelines, but the coaching team is working closely together to ensure a strong performance.

Mumbrú stated that he is not physically fit enough to actively coach the team from the sidelines during the games. He expressed his confidence in Ibrahimagic, stating, "Alan has been an invaluable asset to our team, and I have no doubt that he will lead us to victory."

This change in leadership comes as a shock to many, but the team remains focused on their goal of winning the EM. With Ibrahimagic at the helm, they are determined to make Mumbrú proud and bring home the trophy. The German national team will give it their all in the upcoming quarter-final against Slovenia.
