Discovered: New Reservoirs of Oil and Gas in Punjab, Pakistan

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a significant breakthrough in the energy sector with the discovery of oil and gas at its Dhok Sultan-03 well in District Attock, Punjab.

PPL, which operates the Dhok Sultan Block with a 75% working interest, made the discovery after extensive geological and geophysical studies. The company drilled the well on January 18, 2025, reaching a depth of 5,815 metres. Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) holds the remaining 25% working interest in the Dhok Sultan Block.

The well was drilled with an optimized well design to overcome drilling challenges, and the discovery ranks among the deepest oil discoveries in naturally fractured carbonate formations in the Potwar region. This milestone achievement for PPL could potentially reduce Pakistan's reliance on imported fuel and play a vital role in strengthening the country's energy mix.

Imran Abbasy, Managing Director & CEO of PPL, has been credited with the success at the Dhok Sultan-03 oil and gas discovery. The discovery highlights the untapped hydrocarbon potential of the mature Potwar-Kohat sub-basin.

Company officials suggest that the new reserves could significantly contribute to Pakistan's energy security and economic growth. The discovery is indeed a promising development for the country's energy sector and a testament to PPL's commitment to exploring and developing Pakistan's indigenous hydrocarbon resources.
