Discovered potential front-runner for 2026's top smartphone: Google's freshly launched Pixel model

Google has recently introduced the Pixel 10 series of handsets, headlined by the Pixel 10 Pro XL. The device was unveiled in an unusual Jimmy Fallon-hosted event, marking a departure from the typical tech launch.

The Pixel 10 Pro XL runs on the latest version of Google's Android operating system, Android 16, which is the purveyor of what Google's calling Material 3 Expressive. This update allows for customizations such as live effects on the lock screen's wallpaper, cross-app color themes, and font/typography customization.

In terms of design, the Pixel 10 Pro XL has a design that is similar to the Pixel 9 Pro XL but rivals the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in aesthetic. The device features a matte glass rear that has an almost silken-like sensation, giving it a premium feel. However, the metal frame may scratch easily, so care should be taken to protect it.

The Pixel 10 Pro XL's rear camera enclosure is massive, but it houses a trio of great optics and sensors. The camera hardware is mostly the same as its predecessor, but with improved stabilization for the main lens. The device also features Google's Gemini AI, which can combine and edit photos, offering users more creative control over their images.

The Pixel 10 Pro XL offers customizable display layout, including icons, volume, text sizing, and keyboard scale, allowing users to tailor the device to their preferences. It also supports Qi2 wireless charging and 15W wireless charging, making it convenient to charge on the go. The battery capacity of the Pixel 10 Pro XL has been increased compared to the Pixel 9 Pro XL, and it can handle up to 45W of accelerated charging (previously 37W).

However, it's worth noting that Google's Battery Health Assistance feature can't be turned off, and after 200 cycles, the handset will slow down charging for the sake of battery longevity. The Pixel 10 Pro XL is also not free for Pixel 9 Pro (and XL) users who've claimed for the past 12 months.

The official embargo for Pixel 10 handset reviews lifted at 6pm BST on Wednesday 27 August, and the Pixel 10 Pro XL was officially unveiled on August 20, 2025, with prices starting at €1,299 for the 256 GB model, €1,429 for 512 GB, and €1,689 for 1 TB in Germany. It is expected to be available there from August 2025 onward.

The Pixel 10 Pro XL is shaping up to be a strong competitor in the smartphone market, offering a sleek design, customizable features, and improved camera capabilities. Stay tuned for more reviews and updates on this exciting new device.
