Disgruntled Parents in Sun Prairie Air Their Grievances as Ongoing Investigation into Staff Misbehavior Persists
In the small city of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, a wave of discontent is sweeping through the community, as parents demand changes in the school board. The catalyst for this movement is the ongoing investigation into the behaviour of Robert Gilkey-Meisegeier, the former Dean of Students at Sun Prairie West High School.
Trisha Nowicki, a concerned parent with a daughter who is a sophomore at Sun Prairie West, has spoken up, voicing her worries about her daughter's safety. Her sentiments are shared by many others, as parents protested outside a closed session board meeting at the Sun Prairie Area School Board administration building.
Jessica Schliecher, a former teacher at Sun Prairie West, joined the protest, holding a sign that read, "You can't silence me anymore I'm a former Sun Prairie teacher." Schliecher has witnessed accountability issues within the district.
The investigation into Gilkey-Meisegeier has led to major changes in personnel within the District. Several staff members have been placed on leave, but the district has not disclosed the exact number, citing compliance with the law.
Gilkey-Meisegeier was arrested in July and charged with possession of child pornography and child exploitation. He is accused of 13 counts of possession of child pornography and two counts of child sexual exploitation. Police have confirmed that students at Sun Prairie West were among his victims.
The school board president has resigned, and parents are questioning whether the district did enough to address Gilkey-Meisegeier's reported misconduct. Kristy Yang, a mother of three, described the feeling of dropping her kids off at school as sending them into the lion's den, with no trust that they are in safe hands.
Yang, along with other parents, is demanding action. If the board cannot do their job and have become complacent, they should resign, Yang stated. Gilkey-Meisegeier returned to court for his arraignment on Tuesday, where his lawyer entered a not guilty plea.
The district has stated that all information about their role in the investigation can be found on their website, but parents claim that the school knew about Gilkey-Meisegeier's behaviour but did not take action by contacting police. The search results do not contain information about the current president of the Sun Prairie Area School Board.
This situation has left many parents in a state of uncertainty and fear, hoping for changes that will ensure the safety and well-being of their children in the school environment.
