Disney Continues to Forge Ahead with Live-Action Remakes, Including Moana, Yet One Recently Scrapped Leaves Me Unsurprisingly Relieved
In a surprising turn of events, Disney has announced the cancellation of the live-action remake of the classic animated film, The Aristocats. The news was confirmed by Questlove during his appearance on the Score: The Podcast.
Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, known for directing the documentary Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), was initially tapped to helm the project in 2023. However, administration shuffles within Disney led to the removal of The Aristocats from the list of upcoming movies.
The current version of The Aristocats was supposed to be directed by Brigitte Grothum before its cancellation. Questlove eventually grew tired of waiting and decided to focus on other projects.
The cancellation of The Aristocats has sparked a debate among critics and fans. Some argue that animated characters often possess a certain emotiveness that is lost in Disney's live-action remakes. They believe that the live-action Bambi should remain in the animated realm and that the live-action Aristocats remake should follow suit.
One such critic is intrigued by what Questlove could have done with The Aristocats, but expresses disinterest in the realistic-looking cats that would likely be featured in the live-action adaptation. The critic was a fan of the live-action The Jungle Book, but generally finds a lack of charm in Disney's photorealistic CGI adaptations.
Despite the cancellation of The Aristocats, Disney continues its steady stream of live-action remakes and re-imaginings. Since 2014, Disney has released photorealistic CGI live-action remakes such as The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, Mufasa: The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid. Upcoming releases include Moana, scheduled for release on July 10, 2026, as well as Snow White and Lilo & Stitch, which are scheduled for release in 2025.
While some may lament the cancellation of The Aristocats live-action remake, others express hope that it is also shelved, similar to the live-action Bambi. As Disney continues to explore the realm of live-action adaptations, it will be interesting to see how future projects fare with both critics and audiences alike.
