Disney halts production on The Aristocats remake, as per director Questlove's statement, asserting that the project "wasn't destined to materialize"

In a surprising turn of events, Disney has decided to postpone the modern-day polish of the beloved animated film, The Aristocats. The project, which was announced in 2022, was in development for three years before being halted.

Initially, Questlove, the frontman and drummer of The Roots, was appointed to handle directing duties for the project. However, multiple changes in Disney's leadership affected the modern-day polish of The Aristocats, leading to its eventual pause.

Questlove shared his thoughts on the matter during an appearance on Score: The Podcast, expressing his disappointment about not being able to work on the cat project. He presented Disney with what he'd developed for the project, including music examples and a list of collaborators.

Despite this setback, Questlove, who is an Oscar-winning filmmaker and musician, has 20 other projects to focus on. He mentioned having to leave The Aristocats without supervision due to a third change in Disney's administration.

This decision comes after Disney's current president, Jeff Vahle, made the call to stop the project for the remake of The Aristocats. On the other hand, Disney is still interested in revisiting and remaking some classic films, as demonstrated by the billion-dollar success of Lilo and Stitch, which led to the signing off on a sequel.

Interestingly, another Disney classic, Tangled, was also put on pause due to disappointing reception. Conversely, a live-action Moana movie is set to arrive in July 2026.
