Distinguished athletes Hassan and Kiros shatter personal bests en route to claiming victory in the Sydney Marathon.
In a thrilling display of endurance and determination, Sifan Hassan has become the first female athlete to win a major marathon in Sydney. The Ethiopian long-distance runner triumphed at the World Marathon Majors event, setting a new course record and obliterating the previous best time by more than three minutes.
Hassan's victory came against stiff competition, with Kenya's Brigid Kosgei finishing a close second. The final stretch of the race was particularly gruelling for Hassan, who admitted to almost misjudging her pace during the last 10 kilometres. Despite feeling exhausted, Hassan managed to pull ahead and secure her historic win.
Hailemaryam Kiros, another Ethiopian long-distance runner, won the men's division of the Sydney Marathon, running alongside Hassan in her triumphant journey. Workenesh Edesa Gurmesa, who won the race last year, finished third this time around.
Hassan's time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 22 seconds not only set a new course record but also surpassed Gurmesa's then-record time from last year by a significant margin. This win in Sydney adds to Hassan's impressive list of major marathon victories, which includes the London and Chicago marathons.
Upon her victory, Hassan expressed her gratitude and joy, stating that winning the Sydney Marathon was a historical achievement for her. However, she will not be participating in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month, having prioritised the Sydney Marathon.
The Sydney Marathon once again proved to be a stage for extraordinary performances, with Hassan's victory serving as a testament to the spirit of competition and the human will to push boundaries. As she continues her marathon career, there is no doubt that Hassan will continue to make history and inspire runners around the world.
