Jan-Lennard Struff's US Open journey came to an end in the quarterfinals, as he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The German qualifier put up a valiant fight but ultimately succumbed to the world number seven, losing 3-6, 3-6, 2-6.

Struff's road to the quarterfinals was marked by impressive victories against Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe. However, against Djokovic, he struggled to maintain his aggressive game and made several mistakes, particularly in his serves. Struff admitted that his serve let him down, leading to him feeling nervous and experiencing pressure during the match. He ended up committing six double faults and too many errors.

Despite physical problems in his neck, shoulder, and arm, Djokovic presented an ascending form during the match. He called a physiotherapist during the match but didn't appear to be significantly affected. The Serbian tennis star is now one step closer to his 25th Grand Slam title and becoming the sole record holder ahead of Australian Margaret Court.

Struff's defeat also marked the end of the participation of the last of the initial six German singles participants in the US Open. Former football world champion Mats Hummels, who was in Struff's box, couldn't help him win the match.

The American professional Taylor Fritz, born on October 28, 1997, will face Djokovic in the semifinals. Fritz, who is currently a top-ranked player, reached the final of the US Open this year. It is impossible for someone born in 2023 to be playing in the US Open semifinals as Fritz is the one competing.

Meanwhile, Struff will be part of the German Davis Cup team that aims to qualify for the Davis Cup final round on September 12 and 13 in Tokyo against host Japan. Struff described his two weeks at the US Open as "incredible" and will look to carry that momentum into the Davis Cup competition.

Djokovic aims to secure a win against Fritz on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals and make his daughter Tara happy on her 8th birthday. The winner of the Davis Cup final round will play for the title from November 18 to 23 in the final week of the nations' competition.
