Sumi Jo: A Remarkable Journey in the World of Opera

Sumi Jo, a South Korean soprano, has made a significant impact in the world of opera. Born with a natural talent for music, Jo embarked on a journey that would lead her to international acclaim.

At the age of 19, Jo left her homeland for Italy, driven by her dream of becoming an operatic singer. After enrolling in the music school of Seoul National University at a young age, she felt the need for a more comprehensive education and moved to Rome in 1983.

In Rome, Jo dedicated herself to studying keyboard and vocal music. Her hard work and dedication paid off when Herbert von Karajan, a renowned Austrian conductor, took notice of her talent and recommended her for a debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1986.

Jo's operatic debut was in Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto," where she played the role of Gilda. This was just the beginning of a long and successful career.

Jo's performances at significant opera houses and festivals internationally earned her invitations due to her virtuosic soprano abilities, notably in roles in Rossini operas. She received acclaim for her portrayal of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and the title role in Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor."

Jo's achievements were further recognised when she won several international competitions towards the end of the 1980s. This success catapulted her into the limelight, and she performed at major global events such as the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Jo's loneliness during her initial period in Italy was softened by a stray puppy she found on the street, which became her only companion during those tough times.

Despite personal sacrifices, such as missing her father's funeral in 2006, Jo has achieved remarkable success in her operatic career. She has recorded over 50 albums, including 10 solo ones, such as "Prayers" (2001) and "Only Love" (2000).

Jo's advice for young singers is to emphasise discipline, emotional connection to music, and maintaining loyalty to one's cultural roots. Her voice, highly praised by von Karajan as beautiful, continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

In 1993, Jo was awarded a Grammy Award for her outstanding contribution to the music industry, a testament to her dedication and talent. Today, she continues to perform at prestigious opera houses and major international events, leaving a lasting impact on the world of opera.
