Dresden stabbings: Second suspect surrenders to authorities
In a significant development, Saxony's police have arrested a 20-year-old Syrian in connection with the knife attack on an American passenger in a Dresden tram. The arrest took place in the Cotta district of Dresden.
The suspect is accused of inflicting cut wounds on the American victim, who intervened when two men were harassing women in the tram, according to police reports. He is charged with dangerous bodily harm, like the main perpetrator who surrendered hours after the publication of the wanted notice.
The main perpetrator, a 21-year-old Syrian, has been in pre-trial detention since Tuesday. He is suspected of involvement in the same incident, where the American intervened to protect women from harassment by two men. Initially, he was briefly detained, released, and then re-arrested when new evidence emerged.
Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) praised the arrest, describing it as an important and swift success. He also commended the Saxon police for demonstrating high striking power and professionalism in the arrest. Saxony's Minister of Justice Constanze Krell (CDU) also commended the actions of the second suspect, acknowledging his involvement in the attack.
The 20-year-old suspect is said to have been significantly involved in the attack, but it's important to note that the 21-year-old Syrian, who is the main perpetrator, filled the role of the primary aggressor. At no time was the American's life in danger, according to police reports.
The second suspect was re-arrested due to new evidence and is to be brought before a judge as soon as possible, who will decide on the execution of detention. The 21-year-old Syrian, who has been in detention since Tuesday, is expected to face similar proceedings.
It's worth noting that the American victim suffered a deep cut wound to the face during the attack. However, the police are yet to release further details about the victim's condition or recovery process.
This development marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the Dresden tram knife attack, and the involved forces have built up strong pursuit pressure, according to Minister Schuster. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
