Researchers at the Technical University of Dresden have developed an innovative nature-inspired solution called Leaftronics. This system, created by the Bioinspired and Functional Materials Group, is based on the natural structure of leaves and produces biodegradable substrates.

The Leaftronics system functions effectively with both lab-prepared samples and real sources like municipal wastewater. This versatility suggests that it could be a viable solution in various water treatment scenarios.

The system uses a unique, environmentally friendly metallization process to coat leaf structures with silver or copper. Initial tests on the coated structures showed that the amount of silver ions released into the water was five times lower than the acceptable limit. The low release of silver ions indicates that the coatings are ecologically safe.

The ecologically safe nature of the Leaftronics system is a key advantage. With low silver ion levels released during testing, it seems that the system may be safe for use in various environments. The low release of silver ions also suggests that the system may pose minimal environmental risk.

The produced polymers in Leaftronics can be recycled and have high temperature and chemical stability. This means that the system could potentially contribute to a more circular electronics industry, as these biodegradable substrates could be used in various electronic devices.
