Drop in Betting Revenue for June Recorded in Massachusetts
In the vibrant gaming landscape of Massachusetts, the month of June saw a significant surge in sports betting and casino revenue, according to the latest report published by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC).
The sports betting sector reported a total handle of $532.7 million, a figure that, while slightly lower than previous months, still represented a robust market. Notably, the sportsbook gross revenue for June surged about 50% to $63.4 million, reflecting a stronger hold rate of 11.6%.
Major sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel, both based in the state, reported strong win rates over 12% during the NBA playoffs, contributing to higher profitability. DraftKings kept $32 million as revenue from online sports betting, while FanDuel pocketed $17.8 million. MGM, although reporting a lower handle of $1 million, managed to generate $14.6 million in Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) and paid $5.7 million in taxes.
The state's gaming industry as a whole recorded $159.7 million in revenue for the month, with operators paying a total of $40.3 million in taxes. Encore Boston Harbor (EBH) was the clear leader, reporting a GGR of $60.2 million and paying $15 million in taxes.
The retail betting sector also showed growth, with an average revenue hold of 8.36%. The state's three casinos recorded a combined handle of $7.2 million and kept $605,000 as revenue, resulting in a tax payment of just $71,000 to the state.
Plainridge Park Casino, a key player in the retail betting market, generated approximately $14.6 million in revenue and paid $2.7 million in taxes.
Looking ahead, the future of online casinos in Massachusetts remains uncertain. Although legislation has been stalled, crucial votes are expected by November 19, 2025. If passed, it will allow the MGC to license and regulate online casinos, potentially expanding the state's casino betting options and opening up a new revenue source.
In the meantime, the sports betting industry in Massachusetts continues to thrive, with key performance indicators (KPIs) showing strong growth in sports betting revenue in 2025, driven largely by the NBA playoffs, and increasing taxable revenues and consistent tax payments to the state.
Land-based casinos, such as Encore Boston Harbor, continue to dominate the casino industry in Massachusetts, with strong revenue performance and significant tax contributions. Meanwhile, online sports betting has experienced a surge, with major sportsbooks like DraftKings, FanDuel, and MGM achieving high win rates and substantial revenues. The retail betting sector is also growing, albeit at lower levels, contributing to the state's tax income. The future of online casinos in Massachusetts is uncertain, as legislative decisions regarding their regulation are pending. If online casinos become a reality, it could further expand the state's casino-and-gambling landscape and provide an additional revenue source. Overall, the gaming sector in Massachusetts, including sports betting and casino-games, is showing robust growth and consistent tax payments to the state.
