Drop in Trump's approval rating to a 2019 low following the disclosure of the Mueller report

The release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election has not significantly changed the views of many Americans regarding President Donald Trump's involvement, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll.

Conducted from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning, the poll gathered responses from 1,005 adults throughout the United States. It is the first national survey to measure the response from the American public following the U.S. Justice Department's release of the Mueller report.

The poll results reflect a divided nation, with opinions on Trump's conduct during the presidential campaign remaining largely unchanged. Among those familiar with the Mueller report, 70% say it has not altered their view of Trump or Russia's involvement in the U.S. presidential race.

The poll did not provide specific numbers on the change in opinions since the release of the Mueller report. However, it did reveal that 50% of Americans agree that "Trump or someone from his campaign worked with Russia to influence the 2016 election." This is a drop of 3 percentage points from a similar poll conducted on April 15.

The Mueller investigation, which charged 34 people and three Russian entities, resulted in convictions or guilty pleas from several Trump associates, including Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, and Michael Cohen. Despite these findings, the report did not establish that the Trump campaign had coordinated with Russians.

The poll's results match the lowest level of the year, with 40% saying Trump should be impeached, while 42% say he should not. The responses were sharply split along party lines, with Democrats being more critical of Trump than Republicans.

The poll also found that 58% agree that the president "tried to stop investigations into Russian influence on his administration." Whether Trump's inner circle improperly engaged with Russian agents, or if he tried to interfere with federal investigators afterward, opinions remain divided.

Interestingly, only 15% say they have learned something that changed their view, with a majority now more likely to believe that "Trump or someone close to him broke the law."

The poll has a credibility interval of 4 percentage points. According to the poll, 37% of adults in the United States approve of President Donald Trump's performance in office.

Despite the divided opinions, the poll marks a significant moment in the ongoing saga of the Mueller investigation and its impact on public opinion. As the investigation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the American public's views will evolve.
