Drug Ozempic associated with lower cancer incidence rates
In a groundbreaking study published in the prestigious journal JAMA Oncology, researchers have found a potential link between the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and a reduced risk of certain cancers in individuals with obesity.
The study, led by Dr. Anette 't Hart from the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands, included data from over 200,000 participants. The class of drugs being referred to, GLP-1RAs, are commonly used for managing type 2 diabetes and promoting weight loss. Two specific drugs mentioned in the study, Ozempic (manufactured by Novo Nordisk) and Mounjaro (produced by Eli Lilly), belong to this class.
The study found a small but significant reduction in the risk of developing any of the 14 cancers associated with obesity for each year of treatment with GLP-1RAs. The benefit of taking these drugs was more pronounced in individuals with a higher body mass index (BMI).
Scientists studied 14 cancers associated with obesity and found that out of these, 13 were associated with the condition. The study controlled for other factors that could influence cancer risk, such as age, sex, smoking status, and family history.
Remarkably, the study found no significant difference in cancer risk between people taking different GLP-1RAs, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro. Furthermore, the study did not find any increased risk of specific types of cancer in people taking GLP-1RAs.
The study's findings could have significant implications for the treatment and management of obesity and diabetes, as well as the prevention of cancer in these populations. However, further research is needed to confirm and understand the full implications of this potential cancer risk reduction.
In conclusion, the study suggests that GLP-1RAs may have a protective effect against certain cancers in people with obesity. While more research is required, these findings could open up new avenues for cancer prevention and treatment in individuals with obesity and diabetes.
