Dubai government employees' adaptable work policy scheduled to conclude this Friday

In the heart of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai has embarked on an innovative journey to foster stronger connections between work and family life. The "Flexible Summer" initiative, launched by Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) in June 2023, was designed with a clear mission: to strengthen family ties, promote social cohesion, and enhance productivity.

The initiative, which first saw the light of day on July 1, 2025, was initially piloted across 21 government entities. This trial period was part of a strategic commitment to the "Year of Community", a reflection of Dubai's broader social strategy.

The "Flexible Summer" initiative was conceived with the aim of increasing productivity by creating flexible and accommodating work environments. By offering government employees alternative work schedules while maintaining a standard five-day workweek, the government hoped to boost employee morale in Dubai.

Evaluations under the Dubai Government Excellence Programme highlighted measurable enhancements in performance across participating entities. Data from the trial revealed improvements in work environments and a surge in employee happiness, reaching as high as 98 percent. The initiative showed significant gains in productivity, employee satisfaction, and institutional performance.

The "Flexible Summer" initiative aligns with Dubai's broader goal of strengthening family ties and promoting social cohesion, considered a cornerstone of the city's social strategy. By offering employees more flexibility, the government aims to support employees in balancing their professional and personal lives, ultimately fostering a more harmonious and content workforce.

The "Flexible Summer" initiative, launched by the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR), will conclude on September 12. As the trial period comes to a close, Dubai's government is evaluating the success of the initiative and considering its potential for long-term implementation.

In a city known for its rapid pace and high expectations, the "Flexible Summer" initiative represents a step towards a more balanced and supportive work environment. By prioritising employee well-being and fostering a strong work-life balance, Dubai is setting an example for other cities to follow.
