duo from Cape Breton commemorates their 75th marital milestone
In the picturesque town of Westmount, Nova Scotia, the community gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone. Ray and Jean MacKay, who tied the knot on August 16, 1950, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this past weekend.
The couple, now 102 and 96 years old respectively, exchanged vows in a little white church in Skir Dhu, along the Cabot Trail. The ceremony was a humble affair, with no electricity or running water at the venue. Despite the simple surroundings, the love between Ray and Jean shone brightly.
Ray, a veteran of the Second World War, served in the navy from 1942 until 1945. After returning home, he found his calling as one of Canada's oldest church organists, playing at Westmount United Church. Jean, on the other hand, has always been known for her quick wit and humour.
The reception was lit by kerosene lanterns, and the couple received cards, a congratulatory certificate, and visits from family and friends. Ray made a humorous comment about driving his wife, Jean, up the wall, to which she joked about potentially getting divorced before approaching the Guinness World Record for longest marriage, currently held at 88 years, 349 days.
However, the couple attributes their long and happy marriage to patience and perseverance. They have had their ups and downs over the years, but have found ways to push through. They are proud parents to four children, grandparents to seven, and great-grandparents to eight.
Despite reaching such a significant milestone, the MacKays did not discuss any specific secret to their long marriage. Instead, they encouraged the gathered crowd to cherish each day and to remember that love and patience are key to a successful union.
As the sun set on their anniversary celebration, it was clear that Ray and Jean's love story is one that will inspire generations to come. More great-grandchildren are on the way, ensuring that the MacKay legacy continues to thrive. Here's to many more years of love and happiness for this remarkable couple.
