"Easily surpassing his previous mark, Hafthor Bjornsson breaks Eddie Hall's former world record in a triumphant display"
Hafthor Bjornsson, the Icelandic strongman, has once again made history by breaking the deadlift world record. In a stunning performance at the 2025 World Deadlift Championship in Birmingham, Bjornsson lifted an impressive 510kg (1,124lbs), surpassing his previous world record set in July 2025.
This is not the first time Bjornsson has broken the deadlift world record. He previously set the record at 505kg in July 2025, and earlier in May 2020, he lifted 501kg. His latest record-breaking lift marks the third time he has held the title of the strongest deadlifter in the world.
The animosity between Bjornsson and his predecessor, Eddie Hall, started after Hall's controversial win at the 2017 World's Strongest Man. The rivalry snowballed in the years leading up to their highly anticipated boxing match in 2022, which Bjornsson won via unanimous decision. After breaking Hall's deadlift world record three years later, Bjornsson challenged Hall to a rematch, teasing a potential fourth world record lift in the near future.
Before Bjornsson, Eddie Hall held the deadlift world record from July 2016 to May 2020, when Bjornsson first broke the record. Hall's record-setting lift of 500kg was the world record in the deadlift (triple lift) until Bjornsson's latest achievement.
Interestingly, Benedikt Magnusson, another strongman contender, has lifted 461kg and 460.4kg in deadlift, with the latter being the fifth heaviest lift ever recorded. However, none of these lifts could match Bjornsson's current world record.
Andy Bolton holds the record for the heaviest deadlift ever, with a lift of 575.5kg, which happened in April 2009. Despite Bjornsson's impressive feats, he still falls short of Bolton's record.
Bjornsson had initially retired from Strongman events in 2018 but returned to the sport in 2021. His latest world record lift is a testament to his dedication and perseverance, further solidifying his place as one of the greatest strongmen of all time.
With this latest record-breaking lift, Bjornsson has held the deadlift world record since September 2025. It remains to be seen if he will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of strongman competitions.
