Eight prominent figures omitted from Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup squad
Matt Wallace came close to securing a spot at the Ryder Cup for a second time, finishing as runner-up at the Omega European Masters. However, his quest for a place in the prestigious tournament fell short once again.
Meanwhile, Luke Donald has announced his captain's picks for the Ryder Cup, which include Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick. The team is already bolstered by automatic qualifiers Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, and Rasmus Hojgaard, who secured their spots earlier.
Sergio Garcia, who re-joined the DP World Tour at the end of 2024 with the Ryder Cup in mind, registered a victory in Hong Kong in 2025. Yet, he missed out on a spot in the European team, as did Harry Hall, despite the latter's successful season on the PGA Tour with five top 10s and 15 top 25s in 25 starts.
Hall's compatriot, Aaron Rai, had a consistent season, missing just four cuts for the whole of the PGA Tour season in 2025. He also had notable finishes at the Mexico Open (T4) and the Wyndham Championship (T5). However, like Hall, Rai missed out on a spot in the European team.
Marco Penge, a long and straight hitter who would have suited Bethpage Black, was also unable to secure a place in the European team. Penge, who registered two victories on the DP World Tour and strong finishes at the British Masters and Genesis Scottish Open, will instead focus on securing one of the 10 PGA Tour cards on offer from the DP World Tour.
Nicolai Hojgaard, Rasmus Hojgaard's brother, also missed out on a spot in the European team for the 2025 Ryder Cup. Alex Noren won the British Masters in 2025, but his efforts were not enough to secure a place in the Ryder Cup team.
Thomas Detry produced a best finish of T18 at the RBC Canadian Open in 2025, while he also claimed victory at the WM Phoenix Open that year. Despite these achievements, Detry did not make the cut for the Ryder Cup team.
Sergio Garcia, who had an undefeated record with Jon Rahm at the 2021 Ryder Cup, will not be part of the 2025 team. The Ryder Cup will take place in New York at Bethpage Black from September 26-28, 2025.
Harry Hall, considered one of the best putters in the world, and Marco Penge, with their impressive performances, have shown potential to be contenders for Team Europe in future Ryder Cups. They will be looking to build on their experiences and aim for a spot in the 2027 Ryder Cup.
