Elected as the mayor of Meissen
In the recent mayoral election held in Meißen, the city witnessed a voter turnout of 52.3%. A total of 22,752 eligible voters were called upon to elect a new mayor.
The election saw a surprising turn of events as the non-party-affiliated candidate René Jurisch, who ran with the support of the AfD, garnered 30.4% of the votes. Jurisch, who was once a member of the NPD 25 years ago, has been considered controversial due to his extremist past and neo-Nazi associations.
The Saxon AfD, of which Jurisch's campaign is associated, is classified as right-wing extremist by the state office for the protection of the constitution. However, the party is legally contesting this classification.
Meanwhile, the FDP candidate Martin Bahrmann received 11.1% of the votes in the mayoral election.
The AfD had high hopes for their candidate, as they became the strongest force in the Meißen city council with around 32.9% in June 2024.
Elsewhere in Saxony, an unexpected event unfolded as thousands of people gathered to celebrate in Sebnitz, which is considered the state's biggest party town.
However, the festivities were marred by an ambulance accident on the festival grounds during the Day of Saxony. No further details about the accident are available at this time.
As for the military vehicles moving towards Saxony, the details regarding their destination and purpose remain unclear.
