Electric Bicycle and Pedal-Assist Bicycle Operation Learning

Riding a bike with temporary motor assistance, often regarded as a convenient option, particularly for the elderly, can mask potential risks. Regrettably, these dangers are frequently overlooked, contributing to a rise in collisions involving pedelecs or electric bikes.

In the city of Euskirchen, the Senior Citizens organisation has announced a traffic safety training session, focusing on the safe use of pedelecs (electric bicycles) and e-bikes. This event, scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, will take place at the Emil-Fischer-Gymnasium.

The training session is a collaborative effort between SIE, the Traffic Accident Prevention Department of the County Police, and the company Kraftrad. Participants can expect a comprehensive training programme, covering safe mounting and dismounting, driving, and the specific features involved in the session.

Potential hazards associated with these vehicles will be highlighted during the practical exercises, which will be conducted on the schoolyard of the Emil-Fischer-Gymnasium. The training will be divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part will be introduced by PHK Lydia Huepgen and PHK Joerg Meyer.

A small motor that assists cycling on e-bikes and pedelecs may appeal to older individuals, but it's crucial to understand the implications and potential risks. To facilitate participation, Oliver Bussmann from Kraftrad will provide pedelecs and helmets for those without their own.

Registration for the training session is mandatory and can be made at the Senior Citizens' Office of the City of Euskirchen. Interested individuals can contact Claudia Aulmann by phone at 02251/14-222 or by email at the provided address. The training session is free of charge, but a minimum participation of 8 persons is required.

Participants are welcome to bring their own pedelecs (e-bikes) and protective gear, but suitable helmets are required for the practical exercises. It's important to note that increased accidents involving pedelecs or e-bikes have been observed due to overlooked implications, making this training session timely and essential for those considering using these vehicles.
