Electric Porsche Cayenne Model to Include Wireless Charging Capability
The automotive world is abuzz with the announcement of Porsche's latest innovation - the induction charging system for their upcoming all-electric Cayenne, set to debut at the end of 2025.
This groundbreaking technology, set to revolutionise electric car charging, simplifies the process significantly. Instead of requiring a complex set-up of a wall box or control unit, the new Cayenne Electric will come equipped with a one-box base plate that houses all components within the floor plate.
The charging process is initiated as soon as the vehicle is parked above the floor plate and the parking brake is activated. Energy transfer occurs over a distance of approximately four to six inches, making the process seamless and hassle-free.
Porsche Wireless Charging, as the system is named, will be integrated into the My Porsche app, allowing users to track their charging processes with ease. The base plate is equipped with a motion detector and foreign object detection to ensure safe charging. If any interference is detected, the charging process is automatically interrupted for safety.
The new Cayenne Electric will also boast an eye-catching design, with the showcased model in the UK sporting a dynamic camouflage pattern similar to the IAA show car in Munich. The pattern, which has individual paint sections deliberately left out, remains dark, adding to the vehicle's sleek and modern appearance.
A special view in the Surround View parking function makes it easier to maneuver the Cayenne to the optimal charging position. The vehicle's ride height is also reduced automatically for the charging process, ensuring a smooth and efficient transfer of energy.
The innovative coating on the Cayenne changes colour when electricity flows, a design by Style Porsche. The coating, made up of over 25 extremely thin layers, includes conductive primers, electrode and insulating layers, and electroluminescent material with colour pigments.
Porsche will be the first car manufacturer to bring an 11 kW charging system with a "one-box" base plate for battery-electric vehicles to markets, following the lead of Mercedes-Benz, who recently introduced an 11 kW onboard charger with a new "one-box" baseplate for electric cars in their new GLC EQ model.
Inductive charging offers several advantages over traditional charging methods. It eliminates the need for cables and reduces the risk of damage to the vehicle during the charging process. Moreover, it is more convenient as it only requires placing the vehicle in a charging cradle.
Porsche's commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in this new development. The company intends to offer inductive charging for electric cars, starting with the new all-electric Cayenne. The world premiere of the new Cayenne Electric, complete with its innovative induction charging system, is eagerly anticipated by car enthusiasts and environmentalists alike. The technology, set to launch in Europe in 2026, promises to redefine the electric car charging experience.
