Electric riverboats in Kuching's traditional fleet, operating on electric power, are now part of the smart city initiative.
In a significant step towards sustainable mobility, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Premier of Malaysia, and his family recently rode on the state's first electric-powered 'penambang' named E-Penambang in Kuching, Malaysia.
The E-Penambang, an upgrade of Kuching's iconic river transport, is a more efficient, safer, and eco-friendly mode of travel compared to the traditional 'perahu tambang'. The new fleet of E-Penambang consists of nine electric boats, each retaining the traditional design of the 'perahu tambang'.
The E-Penambang ride, which occurred on August 31, was part of Kuching's push for sustainable and smart mobility. It supports Kuching's Smart City strategy, specifically the Smart City Mobility component.
During the visit, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg discussed the operation of the E-Penambang. The charging station for the E-Penambang is solar-powered and located at the Pontoon Jetty in Kampung Sungai Bintangor.
The press statement issued to announce the E-Penambang ride and its significance in Kuching's transportation system was attended by Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Kuching North Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman, DBKU director Ramzi Abdillah, DBKU Infrastructure Services deputy director Ts. Mohamad Faisal Adenan, and senior officers from Sarawak Energy Berhad.
However, the press statement did not provide details about the cost, manufacturer, or technological specifications of the E-Penambang. It also did not mention any plans for expanding the use of electric-powered 'penambang' in other parts of Malaysia.
At the time of the press statement, the E-Penambang ride was not open to the public. The implementation of the E-Penambang aims to reduce the carbon footprint of river transport in Kuching.
The introduction of the E-Penambang is a testament to Kuching's commitment to sustainable and smart mobility, setting a positive example for other cities in Malaysia to follow.
