In a groundbreaking announcement, Porsche has unveiled plans for an inductive charging system for its electric variant of the Porsche Cayenne, set to roll out in 2026. The system, which will make its public debut at the IAA Mobility in Munich in September 2025, is the first of its kind for the automaker.

The charging system, designed to be driven over, waterproof, and dustproof, can be left outdoors. It measures 117 cm in length, 78 cm in width, and 6 cm in height, and weighs 15 kg. Customers can purchase a corresponding plate of 50 kg for their garage or driveway. The charging plate is equipped with an LTE module for assignment via the Porsche app.

The charging process can be scheduled through the app or the vehicle's interior can be pre-conditioned. When an electric Cayenne comes within range of the WLAN signal, external cameras with positioning lines appear on the infotainment screen. Two circles need to be maneuvered over each other to log in the charging plate.

Porsche and partners have highlighted the technology's benefits, such as intelligent bidirectional charging and bonuses for vehicle-to-grid use. The system is also safe for cats and other animals, as it will not harm them if they sit on it during the charging process.

The charging plate stands securely on rubber nubs and can be permanently screwed to the floor. The inductive charging system does not require a plug or activation, and begins automatically when the Cayenne is parked over the charging plate.

While pricing details remain unspecified, Porsche has confirmed that the wireless charging system will cost less than 7,000 euros. If any living being interferes with the inductive charging process, it will be interrupted and will resume automatically once the path is clear.

The market introduction of the wireless charging system will be in line with the electric Cayenne in 2026, and will initially be available in Europe. Further markets will follow.

Porsche claims an energy transfer efficiency of up to 90% from the power grid to the battery, making it an efficient and convenient charging solution for electric vehicle owners. The system is set to revolutionise the charging experience for Porsche Cayenne owners, offering a seamless and hassle-free charging experience.
