Electric vehicles from Honda and Acura will be granted access to Tesla's Supercharger network starting this summer.
Honda and Acura have announced that their future electric vehicle (EV) models will be compatible with Tesla's Supercharger network. This integration is expected to be implemented in the upcoming models starting later this year.
The compatibility will be achieved through the use of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port, a decision that forms part of Honda and Acura's plans to expand their EV models' compatibility with various charging networks.
Honda will release its NACS adapter, enabling compatibility with over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers in Canada and the United States. The adapter will be available for purchase through Honda and Acura dealerships.
Honda and Acura EV owners will gain access to Tesla's Supercharger network starting this summer. To facilitate this, HondaLink and Acura EV apps will notify customers when the adapter becomes available and help locate compatible Tesla Superchargers.
This move by Honda and Acura follows a similar trend. Previously, adapters from other automakers have ranged from free to around $310. Honda joins a list of companies, including Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Polestar, and Nissan, that have secured access to Tesla's charging infrastructure.
Tesla has announced that several other automakers, including BMW, Genesis, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, and Kia, will gain Supercharger access. However, Tesla has not specified the exact timeline for these automakers to gain access. It is also worth noting that the Chinese automaker Chery, with its new brand Exeed, will begin delivering electric vehicles equipped with NIO's battery swap technology, but there is no clear evidence that these manufacturers will have access to Tesla's Supercharger network specifically.
The integration of the NACS charging port by Honda and Acura is an effort to make their EV models more versatile in terms of charging options. This move is expected to provide convenience to EV owners by offering a wider range of charging stations to choose from.
Pricing for the adapter has not been disclosed by Honda. In Canada, the adapter is expected to be available in summer 2025, while in the U.S., it is scheduled for June 2025.
In the near future, BMW, Genesis, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, and Kia are set to gain access to Tesla's Supercharger network, although the exact timeline for this remains unclear. The integration of NACS charging port by these automakers is expected to follow a similar pattern to that of Honda and Acura.
This development is a significant step towards promoting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. By increasing the compatibility between different EV models and charging networks, it becomes easier for consumers to transition to electric vehicles, knowing that they will have access to a vast network of charging stations.
