Elevador Glória Incident Results in Severe Injuries Being Transferred to São José, São Francisco Xavier, and Santa Maria Hospitals

In a tragic incident that unfolded in the heart of Lisbon on Wednesday afternoon, the iconic Elevador da Glória derailed on Calçada da Glória, resulting in 15 fatalities and multiple injuries.

The Elevador da Glória, a mode of transportation connecting Restauradores to Príncipe Real, suddenly veered off its tracks, causing chaos and panic among passengers. The name of the driver or the last maintenance worker involved in the accident has not been disclosed, but it is confirmed that the brakeman of the car was among the deceased.

Hospitals across the city have been overwhelmed with the influx of injured individuals. Five of the injured were admitted to Hospital de Santa Maria, all in critical condition, while at least seven were taken to Hospital de São José. Three more were taken to Hospital de São Francisco Xavier, and injured patients were also received at Hospital de Cascais.

One of the victims was intubated and will undergo surgery. The exact number of passengers on the lift at the time of the accident is unconfirmed, but each lift can carry approximately 43 people.

Despite the extensive damage and loss of life, no further details about the cause of the derailment have been provided. The city of Lisbon and its people are left in shock, mourning the tragic loss of life and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
