The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring the bird flu situation, with the Health and Human Services arm working on the development of vaccines against Avian Influenza, specifically the H5N1 strain. According to Nirav Shah, MD, JD, the principal deputy director at the CDC, federal agencies are engaged in rich discussions regarding the bird flu situation.

The institution responsible for producing 4.8 million vaccine doses is Moderna, which has utilised its mRNA platform technology for swift and scalable vaccine development. However, it's worth noting that the project was among several mRNA vaccine projects halted by the US government in 2025.

The vaccines, currently in bulk form, will be produced in multi-dose vials. The fill-and-finish steps in the vaccine production process are being performed at a manufacturing partner, without disrupting seasonal flu vaccine production.

While federal health officials confirm that the vaccine is well matched to the circulating strain, Shah did not provide any new information about the production, distribution, or availability of the bird flu vaccines. It takes a couple of months to fill and finish the vaccine doses, but the article does not provide any new information about the fill-and-finish steps or the manufacturing partner involved.

Shah identified potential trigger factors for a potential human outbreak of bird flu, including a change in transmission propensity (human-to-human in addition to animal-to-human spread), increased illness severity, a change in the complexion of the cases (H5N1 infections appearing in people with no epidemiological links to affected dairy farms), and the discovery of mutations.

A propaganda campaign will accompany the vaccines to encourage their use, but Shah did not address the propaganda campaign in his statements. The concern about the accuracy of how the bird flu will mutate once it can be spread from human to human is a significant factor in the CDC's preparations for a potential human outbreak.

Dawn O'Connell, JD, from the University of Minnesota's CIDRAP, has made similar statements, indicating that the CDC is preparing for the possibility of a human outbreak of bird flu. Shah's statements suggest a concern about the occurrence of the situations he mentioned as potential triggers for a human outbreak of bird flu.
