Embrace Self-Love Initially

In the pursuit of a fulfilling life, our relationship with ourselves sets the foundation for all our other interactions. According to most psychologists, being loved and being able to love is crucial to our happiness. This concept, often referred to as self-love, plays a significant role in our quality of life.

Self-love allows us to celebrate our positive qualities and accept our negative ones. A simple practice to recognise and appreciate our positive qualities is to make a list of the characteristics we like about ourselves. Additionally, giving ourselves permission to say "no" is a key aspect of self-love, allowing time for reflection before making decisions.

Another demonstration of self-love is allowing ourselves to ask for help when needed. Acknowledging that life's challenges can't be tackled alone is a sign of self-awareness and self-compassion. Learning to be compassionate with ourselves is a crucial skill for cultivating self-love, involving eliminating critical and harsh self-talk.

Self-love is not the same as being narcissistic or selfish. It means having a positive regard for our own wellbeing and happiness. With self-love, we are less critical and harsh with ourselves when we make mistakes.

In Germany, February offers a variety of opportunities to explore self-love. Abtei Münsterschwarzach hosts courses such as "Being in the Moment," "Healing Rituals," and a workshop on "Being a Good Friend to Yourself - The Practice of Christian Self-Love." Pravahi offers Holotropic Breathwork and Tantra breathwork sessions in Frankfurt. Additionally, there are yoga and meditation retreats in the Alps around February 19–22 focused on self-care and inner reflection.

Celebrating one's accomplishments is important for reinforcing our acknowledgement and integration of positive qualities. Enjoying time alone is essential for self-love, often through activities like walking, dining, or watching movies that we enjoy. Being mindful of how and with whom we spend our time is a reflection of our self-perception, involving spending time on enjoyable activities and being around positive people.

Sigmund Freud once said, "Love and work... work and love. That's all there is." While the search for love can cause frustration and unhappiness for many, cultivating self-love can provide a solid foundation for a happier, more fulfilling life.
