=======================================================================

Over the past two weeks, there have been several rescues involving trampers and climbers on Taranaki Maunga and from the mountains in Tongariro National Park. These incidents highlight the importance of being well-prepared and vigilant when embarking on outdoor adventures in New Zealand's mountainous regions.

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is urging outdoor enthusiasts to follow simple steps for a safe adventure. The council's reputation for issuing warnings about the dangerous transition period from winter to spring in the mountainous regions of New Zealand's North and South Islands is well-deserved.

One tool that can assist in better organising travel plans for hikes and treks is the 'Plan My Walk' app. This application provides detailed route information, safety features, and GPS tracking to ensure preparedness and safety during outdoor activities. Using the Plan My Walk app can help hikers and trampers find the right track, check for alerts, see weather warnings, and receive a suggested gear list.

Spring conditions in mountainous areas of the North and South Island are still tricky. Spring weather can be unsettled, with all four seasons potentially experienced in the same day. Snow and ice are still present in the alpine terrain of Taranaki Maunga and Tongariro National Park. Therefore, packing warm layered clothing, a rain jacket, a warm hat and gloves, a head torch, and an appropriate emergency communication device are essential, regardless of the weather forecast and length of trip.

The appropriate gear, including crampons, is needed for these conditions, according to MSC Chief Executive. Before leaving home, it's crucial to check the weather forecast and the conditions one is likely to encounter, and understand how these will impact the trip. It's important to understand one's capabilities and skills, choose adventures suited to the conditions, and have a 'plan B' if something changes.

The NZ Land Safety Code emphasises choosing the right trip, understanding the weather, packing warm clothes and extra food, sharing plans, and taking care of oneself and others. MSC is reminding outdoor enthusiasts to follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
