Employees at New York City museums and galleries are provided with an opportunity to showcase their talents
====================================================================================
The Whitney Museum of Art is known for showcasing some of the most innovative and thought-provoking artworks from around the world. However, it's not just the exhibitions featuring established artists that make the museum a cultural hub. The museum's staff art show, an annual event, is a testament to the creativity and artistic talents of its own employees.
This year, more than 80 staff members, including Eleanor Lovinsky and Midrene Lamy, are submitting their work for the 2025 staff show, which will be held at the Westbeth Gallery on 55 Bethune St. The show, usually held over the summer, will run from October 9 to November 9 this year.
Eleanor Lovinsky, a curatorial assistant at the museum, has been a regular participant in the staff show. Her work often incorporates unconventional materials such as slides from abandoned buildings, tissue samples, and even a mobile. Last year, she recycled a birdcage she found, adorning it with bits of eggshells. In 2023, her work involved similar materials, creating a unique and thought-provoking piece.
Midrene Lamy, the Whitney associate manager of community programs and partnerships, has participated in three of the institution's staff art shows. She is known for her charcoal drawings, but this year, she has submitted multiple works for consideration, hinting at a potential exploration of new mediums.
The Whitney Museum of Art's staff show encourages artists to submit work that fits within the space available. The show accepts various forms of art, including sculptures, drawings, paintings, performances, collages, poetry, and clothing design.
Meanwhile, the Parsons School of Design is hosting an inaugural staff art show entitled "Making Time" from October 16 to November 9 at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, located at 66 Fifth Avenue. It remains to be seen if this new event will inspire more staff artists from the Whitney Museum of Art to share their talents.
Lovinsky finds motivation to create art for the staff show at the Whitney Museum of Art, appreciating the recognition of staff members as artists. For her, and many others, the staff show is a valuable opportunity to express their creativity and contribute to the museum's vibrant artistic community.
