Engaging in Campus Activities and Understanding University Policies: Insights on Greek Life, Hazing, and Student Behavior Regulations

Georgetown University is gearing up for an exciting new academic year, with a focus on fostering a vibrant, diverse, and joyful community. The university's Weeks of Welcome (GWOW) and student organizations play a pivotal role in this endeavour.

The GWOW, scheduled for the first three weeks of the semester, offers a plethora of engagement opportunities. Events such as the Welcome Back Jack BBQ on the Hilltop, a carnival on Healy and Copley Lawn, kayaking on the Potomac, and more, are designed to welcome students back to campus and help them settle in.

One of the highlights of the GWOW is the Council of Advisory Boards Fair (CAB Fair), which will be held on August 30, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Copley Lawn. This event provides students with the chance to learn about the hundreds of student organizations at Georgetown University, offering opportunities to connect with fellow students, develop leadership skills, express creativity, and contribute to the vibrant community.

Georgetown University, a 500-year-old institution rooted in Catholic and Jesuit education, places a high emphasis on the values of respect and care for each other. These values are reflected in its Code of Student Conduct, an expression of the values at the heart of its Jesuit education tradition.

All Georgetown students are expected to know and abide by the Code of Student Conduct. Hazing, which is antithetical to these values, is a violation of the University's Code of Student Conduct. Healthy ways to welcome new members should never involve abusive, demeaning, or dangerous activities.

Resources are available for recognizing, preventing, and reporting hazing. However, it's important to note that the specific resources related to abuse in student organizations were not detailed in the provided texts. Students are encouraged to seek guidance from the Office of Student Conduct, which can be contacted at studentconduct@our website.edu.

It's also worth mentioning that Georgetown University does not support a social Greek system. Social fraternities and sororities are not eligible for university benefits or oversight.

As the new academic year begins, students are encouraged to explore the many organizations and opportunities available on campus during the next few weeks. Whether it's through the GWOW events or joining a student organization, there's something for everyone at Georgetown University.
