Enhanced rejuvenation: Five Berlin districts to receive additional reinforcement
In a bid to address the ongoing issue of funding for climate protection measures and energy projects, the Berlin city administration, specifically the Berlin Senate (Berliner Senat), has made a decision that could bring significant change. The decision concerns the "Sustainable Redevelopment" program, a long-standing initiative aimed at ecologically and socially developing Berlin districts, which is now entering a new phase.
The selected districts for stronger support include Marzahn-Süd and Marzahn-Ost in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Tegel-Süd in Reinickendorf, Ostseeviertel in Lichtenberg, Osloer Straße in Mitte, and Pankow-Süd. Each of these districts has already been informed about the decision.
The goal of this enhanced support is to stabilize and further develop these neighbourhoods sustainably. This will be achieved through the implementation of Integrated Urban Development Concepts for each selected district, which will outline goals and projects for the coming years, with the aim of maximizing impact using the provided funds.
The redesign of green spaces, streets, city squares, and playgrounds will be climate-friendly, as part of the program's focus on addressing climate change. Urban development funding aims to improve living and housing conditions over a longer period, particularly in disadvantaged or transforming neighbourhoods.
The program opens up opportunities for implementing climate adaptation and energy transition projects in the districts. By combining social and ecological investment, a long-term added value for society is created. Cooperation with the districts will be a key factor in the success of these projects.
The selected districts share similar challenges, many of which are social burdens or urban changes. Strengthening neighbourhoods, improving education and sports offerings, and enhancing the public realm are all key objectives of the program.
First investments and preparatory measures are expected to start as early as 2027. The funding creates conditions for functioning neighbourhoods that are more resilient to the consequences of climate change. The program allows for the implementation of projects that will not only improve the quality of life in these districts but also contribute to Berlin's overall efforts in combating climate change.
In conclusion, the "Sustainable Redevelopment" program marks a significant step forward in Berlin's mission to create more sustainable, resilient, and livable neighbourhoods. The decision to support five additional districts is a testament to the city's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by disadvantaged or transforming neighbourhoods, and to creating a better future for all Berliners.
