Enhanced Sanitation Strategies: Frequent Emptying of Waste Containers and Regular Cleaning of Urban Trains along Main Streets
In an effort to improve cleanliness across the city, Neuss has announced a series of measures aimed at maintaining a cleaner and more pleasant environment for its residents. The City Administration and Waste and Recycling Logistics Neuss GmbH (AWL) have jointly reviewed and implemented these measures.
The main street in the city centre and neighbourhood centres will receive more frequent and thorough cleanings in the future. A full basic cleaning is planned several times a year for these areas. To ensure the efficiency of these cleanings, AWL vehicles will be equipped with a water tank attachment to clean the streets with a kind of 'scrubber'.
Overflowing containers can be reported directly to AWL via a QR code, ensuring prompt emptying. In addition, large multilingual stickers will be placed on the containers, informing about fines for illegally dumped waste and options for free paper disposal at AWL.
Twelve sites with the highest levels of pollution from old paper and glass containers will be dismantled. The remaining sites will be cleaned more frequently due to the dismantling of these twelve sites. Adjusting the collection intervals has led to a significant reduction in complaints, as explained by Sascha Karbowiak, a representative from AWL.
The cleanliness campaign also aims to sensitize students to cleanliness and waste avoidance to prevent future street pollution in Neuss. The City Administration and AWL are planning a cleanliness campaign with schools and educational institutions as part of this initiative.
AWL currently offers projects at primary schools as part of the cleanliness campaign, educating students about the importance of cleanliness and waste management. Sascha Karbowiak and Marc Vanderfuhr, representatives from AWL, are optimistic that the measures initiated will contribute to improving cleanliness in Neuss.
The contract awarding for solutions attaching water tanks to AWL street cleaning vehicles in 2023 is typically conducted by the corresponding municipal or city public works department responsible for street cleaning services. The City Administration and AWL are also examining the possibility of increasing the existing personnel at AWL to ensure all services are provided satisfactorily.
The cleanliness campaign is part of the ongoing efforts to improve cleanliness in the city of Neuss. Sascha Karbowiak and Marc Vanderfuhr expressed their belief that these measures will significantly improve the cleanliness and overall appearance of the city.
