Enhanced travel conditions for commuters in Karlsruhe

In an effort to improve the passenger experience at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, Fluko-GmbH has proposed coordination target values for airport coordination. This coordination aims to give the airport a say in the flight plans of airlines, allowing for departure times to be distributed more evenly.

The first half of 2025 saw around 700 passengers encounter difficulties due to increased traffic, insufficient staff, short-term sick leave, and unreliable baggage handling technology. To address these issues, the airport is taking on-site measures to improve passenger flow and is addressing staff shortages due to illness with a pool of control forces and a reserve of personnel.

The state is providing assistance in this endeavour. The Government Presidency of Stuttgart is procuring two additional security lanes, with initial costs of around 1.4 million euros being borne by the Ministry of Transport. The RPS will initially cover the personnel costs for staffing the security lanes, but these will ultimately be refinanced via the aviation security fee. Meanwhile, the baggage screening system will be procured by the RPS, with costs of around one million euros being borne by the Ministry of Transport.

The new multi-level baggage screening system (MLBS) is expected to eliminate congestion at check-in and thus the first point of delay. Minister Winfried Hermann has asked Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder to support a prioritized processing for the airport coordination application, effective from the summer flight schedule 2026.

Berthold Frieß, Ministerial Director in the Ministry of Transport, has stated that immediate action is necessary to address these issues. To further support the airport, the Ministry of Transport is providing 2.4 million euros to improve the situation for passengers.

It's important to note that the state of Baden-Württemberg has provided funding for improvements, but there is no information available about the Federal Ministry of Transport making a decision to provide 2.4 million euros to improve security controls and baggage screening at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.

For those seeking more information, contact details for the Ministry of Transport's Press Office and Citizen's Representative are available online. The goal of these improvements is to minimize the number of "standstills" for passengers at the airport, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience.
