Enhanced travel conditions for passengers in Karlsruhe due to land improvement efforts

In an effort to enhance the travel experience for passengers, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport is implementing a series of measures to address staff shortages, bottlenecks, and delays.

The state government is providing 2.4 million euros to support these improvements, with the costs for the investment being refinanced through the aviation security fee. This funding will aid in the acquisition of two additional security lanes and a multi-level baggage screening system, which are expected to eliminate bottlenecks at check-in and reduce delays.

To address staff shortages due to illness, the airport is implementing a pool of control forces and a reserve of personnel. Situation-based measures on site are also being taken to improve passenger flow.

In the first half of 2025, around 700 passengers experienced issues due to insufficient staff, short-term sick leave, unreliable baggage handling technology, and a 27% increase in traffic. The new measures aim to alleviate these problems and ensure a smoother travel experience.

The airport has submitted an application for airport coordination, effective from the summer flight plan 2026. This coordination aims to enable the airport to have a say in the flight plans of airlines, so that departure times can be leveled out and the number of "standstills" where passengers have to watch their flights leave without them can be minimized.

Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann has asked Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder to support a prioritized processing of the airport coordination application. Berthold Frieß, Ministerial Director in the Ministry of Transport, has stated that each individual case is frustrating and urgent action is needed.

The state is pre-financing 2.4 million euros due to the termination of an agreement between the federal government and the states regarding aviation security control technology in autumn 2024. The costs for staffing the security lanes will be initially covered by the State Presidency Stuttgart, but will ultimately be refinanced through the aviation security fee. The baggage screening system will be acquired by the State Presidency Stuttgart, with costs being borne by the Ministry of Transport.

No further traffic or contact details were provided in the current paragraph. However, within Baden-Württemberg, the responsible minister mentioned for these improvements is Winfried Hermann, who is the state transport minister involved in improving the airport's situation. The federal minister's specific name for this action is not stated.
