Lithuania is making significant strides in its military infrastructure, with a focus on facilitating rapid and efficient movement of Allied forces. The Acting Minister of Transport and Communications, Eugenijus Sabutis, has emphasized the importance of these projects and the need for timely and high-quality delivery.
Six new access roads to the training area in Rūdninkai have already been built, and four more are scheduled for completion by the end of the year. This development is a crucial step in preparing for the arrival of the German Brigade, which is set to be stationed in Rūdninkai by the end of 2027.
The construction of a new 9 km long railway line from Jašiūnai to Stasylai, leading directly to the military training area of Rūdninkai, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. This new railway access road will ensure secure transport of military equipment and personnel to the training area.
In addition to the infrastructure developments in Rūdninkai, the development of the dual-use cargo loading area in Palemonas is a strategic priority. By 2028, a 300-space facility for heavy vehicles and three new railway tracks will be completed in Palemonas, enabling the simultaneous servicing of three trains carrying military equipment.
The Kaunas Intermodal Terminal in Palemonas is already connected to the European rail network, providing Lithuania with an additional strategic advantage. The Rail Baltica project, a priority infrastructure project in Lithuania, is a crucial link enabling NATO Allies to move more swiftly across the region.
