Enhancing Public Security Through Financial Support
The city of Hürth celebrated a historic moment on September 6th, 2025, as the new fire and rescue station in Hermülheim was officially handed over. The modern facility, housing 115 full-time staff and around 70 members of the voluntary fire brigade, was described as a strong foundation of the city society.
The handover ceremony began with performances by the Mini Firefighters and the Youth Fire Brigade, setting a lively tone for the event. The brass band of the music school of the city of Hürth played drumrolls during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, adding a musical touch to the occasion.
Mayor Dirk Breuer, in his speech, quoted a former federal president, Johannes Rau, stating that investing in people and structures is necessary to create security and trust. He emphasized that the new station, with its modern workshops, up-to-date social spaces, and state-of-the-art IT technology, was a testament to this investment.
Michael Mund, head of the Hürth fire department, considered the handover a significant milestone. He emphasized that the people who work at the station, both full-time and volunteer, are the heart of the fire brigade's work.
Construction work on the station began with a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2021. The first construction phase was completed at the end of April 2023, and the deployment forces moved into their new home from April to May 2023. The demolition of the old tower in June 2023 marked the definitive end of an era.
The subsequent program included tours of the new facilities, demonstrations of deployment forces, and extensive information about firefighting and rescue operations. Fire department chaplain Holger Reiprich and pastor Rudolf Kusch, honorary member of the fire brigade since 2009, conducted the solemn consecration.
The fire department staged a simulation of what happens in case of a grease fire, providing citizens with a glimpse into the everyday operations of the emergency forces. Trainees from the fire department and rescue services demonstrated practical exercises in technical assistance, such as human rescues.
After the official part of the event, citizens had the opportunity to ask firefighters questions and learn more about their daily work. As a gift for the entrance area of the new station, Mayor Dirk Breuer brought an old cast-iron fire alarm that was installed in 1905 and was in use at the Chemiewerk Bayer until 1973.
Despite extensive searches, no information was found about a Bundestag deputy and Parliamentary State Secretary attending the inauguration of the rescue station.
The handover ceremony included a program featuring insights and action, allowing citizens to experience the modern building and the work of the emergency forces. The event concluded with musical accompaniment from the evangelical brass choir, the brass circle "Laudate" of the Catholic Church, and brass players from the evangelical brass choir of the Frechen parish.
