EU insists on the absence of a peace agreement without the inclusion of Ukraine
The European Union (EU) has taken a strong stance against Russia's aggression against Ukraine, expressing deep concern and opposition to any terms that might reward Russia for its actions. EU leaders have highlighted Ukraine's right to self-defence, emphasising the wider implications of Russia's war for European and international security.
In a statement, the EU leaders underlined the need for a diplomatic solution to protect Ukraine's and Europe's vital security interests. They have pledged to continue upholding and imposing sanctions against the Russian Federation, while also committing to provide political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support to Ukraine.
The EU's position is clear: any arrangement that rewards Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine would gravely endanger the security of the European continent. The EU leaders have welcomed President Trump's efforts towards ending Russia's aggression against Ukraine and have expressed their intention to continue providing additional security guarantees based on international law.
The EU's stance is not isolated. A "coalition of the willing," led by France and the UK, along with support from the USA, has committed to providing troops, air, sea forces, cyber support, training, and reconstruction help for Ukraine as part of long-term security guarantees. However, no exact timeline for these contributions has been specified yet.
The EU leaders have also emphasised the importance of prosecuting those responsible for war crimes in Ukraine. They stress that any peace in Ukraine must include the full participation of Ukraine's democratically elected leadership. The people of Ukraine, they believe, should have the freedom to decide their future.
As the US President, Donald Trump, is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week, the European Parliament leaders have welcomed the meeting. They reiterate the importance of a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine, grounded in international law and principles of the UN Charter. The EU's security guarantees will respect the security and defense policy of certain Member States and consider the interests of all Member States.
In summary, the European Union stands firm against Russia's aggression in Ukraine, emphasising the need for a diplomatic solution that protects Ukraine's and Europe's vital security interests. The EU is committed to providing support to Ukraine and ensuring that peace is achieved with the full participation of Ukraine's democratically elected leadership, in line with international law.
