EU moves forward with a fresh plan to alleviate economic hardship within its borders
On a chilly Saturday in February 2024, Duisburg's city centre was transformed into a bustling rescue zone as the third Disaster Protection Day took place. From 10:30 AM to 5 PM, visitors had the unique opportunity to witness various aid organisations and emergency services in action.
The main attraction was the rescue helicopter "Eagle 1", which celebrated its 50th anniversary during the event. "Eagle 1" made a dramatic landing on the opera square in front of the Duisburg city theatre, drawing crowds of spectators. Visitors could view the helicopter and a historical model, offering a glimpse into the evolution of disaster response over the past half-century.
The civil defence multi-purpose shelter at Kรถnig-Heinrich-Platz U-Bahn station was open to the public for three hours, providing a chance for everyone to understand its crucial role in times of crisis. Meanwhile, youth organisations invited visitors to participate in activities, including filling sandbags for flood protection at a self-help station.
The search and rescue dog unit from Germany demonstrated rescue exercises up to 30 meters high, showcasing the incredible skills and dedication of these canine heroes. For those interested in joining the efforts, opportunities, training paths, and direct contact persons were available for discussion.
Visitors could also test their skills in a flight simulator, offering a taste of the challenges faced by emergency responders. Numerous aid organisations and emergency services participated in the event, including the professional fire brigade, volunteer fire brigade, police, military, rescue services, Technical Relief Agency (THW), German Red Cross, Johanniter, Maltese Aid Service, Ambulant First Aid, and rescue organisation Germany.
Many guests took advantage of the opportunity to talk to these organisations and emergency services, learning more about their vital work and how they could get involved. The city centre was alive with the sound of sirens, the sight of emergency vehicles, and the spirit of community as Duisburg came together to celebrate Disaster Protection Day.
