EU proposes reducing tariffs on American industries to save European automakers
The European Union has put forth a proposal to abolish tariffs on US industrial products, marking a significant step towards fostering trade between the two economic powerhouses. This move is part of a broader transatlantic trade deal that was unveiled a week ago.
Under the European Commission's proposal, tariffs on US industrial goods would be eliminated, providing a much-needed boost to US industries. The Commission's proposal also includes extending preferential market access for a range of US seafood and non-sensitive agricultural goods.
The elimination of tariffs on US industrial goods is a precondition for President Donald Trump's administration to drop tariffs on European cars. If the European Commission's proposal is accepted, the tariffs on European cars, currently at 27.5%, would be reduced to 15%. The reduction in Washington's auto tariffs would be backdated to August 1, as per the terms of the recently unveiled transatlantic trade deal.
The European Commission's proposal is aimed at unlocking reductions in tariffs on both sides, with the ultimate goal of boosting trade between the European Union and the United States. The Commission has issued a press release detailing the proposal, outlining the benefits it could bring to both economies.
In a secondary proposal, the European Commission has also proposed new legislation to eliminate tariffs on processed lobster, further expanding the scope of the transatlantic trade deal.
The transatlantic trade deal, if successful, could mark a new era of economic cooperation between the European Union and the United States, benefiting businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. The European Commission's proposals are currently under review, and it remains to be seen how they will be received by the US administration and European Union member states.
