EU trade leader embarks on journey to India, as negotiations advance swiftly on trade agreement

The EU-India free trade agreement negotiations are making significant strides, with the latest round of talks due to commence next week. This development comes as European Commissioner for Trade, Maros Sefcovic, prepares for a three-day visit to India starting on September 11, 2025.

According to the European Commission, bilateral trade between the EU and India reached an impressive $137.5 billion in the 2023/24 fiscal year, marking a nearly 90% increase over the past decade. This growth underscores the importance of a successful free trade agreement for both parties.

India, in particular, is pushing for greater access for its textiles, pharmaceuticals, steel, and petroleum products. On the other hand, the EU is seeking steep duty cuts on vehicles, medical devices, wine, spirits, and dairy products.

The negotiations, which have been ongoing for the past three-and-a-half years, are in an advanced stage. Rapid progress has been made, and this next round of talks is considered crucial for reaching a deal by the end of the year.

The EU's commitment to concluding negotiations by the end of the year has been reiterated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who recently spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Von der Leyen emphasised India's key role in pressuring Russia to end its war in Ukraine.

The EU and India aim to agree on a joint strategic agenda at a summit as early as 2026. This ambitious goal underscores the importance both parties place on strengthening their relationship.

Notably, the free trade agreement negotiations stalled for eight years before resuming in 2021. This resumption of talks has led to the current positive momentum.
