Celebrating a Century of Aviation: Essen/Mülheim Airport's 100th Anniversary

On the 7th of September, 2025, Essen/Mülheim Airport will mark a significant milestone as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. The airport, which officially received its airport rights as an approved emergency landing site on August 25, 1925, has played a crucial role in connecting the Rhine-Ruhr region with Europe for over a century.

The celebration will be a family-friendly event, taking place from 12 PM to 5 PM at the airport. Visitors can expect a variety of activities, including live music, interactive activities for children such as a merry-go-round, miniature train, and bouncy castles, and food and drink provided by Mülheim carnival enthusiasts and the airport restaurant "Check-In".

One of the highlights of the celebration will be the display of oldtimer aircraft, including a Cessna and the biplane "Inge". The airport grounds, which have been in use for aviation since 1919, will also offer the opportunity to visit the airship hangar.

The airport's history is rich and fascinating. In the 1920s, the Industry and Commerce Chamber of Essen desired an airport to serve the Ruhr region, and on August 25, 1925, the site of Essen/Mülheim received official permission to operate as an approved emergency airfield (Notlandeplatz), although the specific person or institution that was granted this permission is not explicitly named in the available sources. The airport connected the Rhine-Ruhr region with the rest of Europe in the 1920s, and the first regular flights from Essen/Mülheim to major European cities were established in 1930.
