Europe's Data Strategy: Setting the Stage for Europe's Dominance in the Data-Driven Economy?

The European Commission will be hosting a discussion on its data strategy on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM (CEST). The event, which will take place on Twitter using the hashtag #ourdataeu, aims to facilitate a conversation about the EU's proposed approach to data and its potential impact on competitiveness and innovation.

The data strategy proposes the creation of a single market for data, with the intention of facilitating government-to-business, business-to-business, and business-to-government data sharing. This market is intended to strengthen the EU's position in global competition, particularly with the United States and China.

The Center for Data Innovation will be moderating the discussion, with Eline Chivot, a Senior Policy Analyst at the Center, presiding over the event. The Centre will assess the extent to which the EU's data strategy is on track to strengthen EU competitiveness and innovation.

The discussion will feature a variety of stakeholders, including Philip Malloch, the Director of Economic and Social Policy at Facebook, Jessica Lennard, the Senior Director of Global Data Privacy and AI Initiatives at Visa, and Teemu Ropponen, the General Manager of MyData Global. Malte Beyer-Katzenberger, a Team Leader for Data Policies in the unit for Data Policy and Innovation, DG Connect, European Commission, will also be participating.

Feedback from a public consultation will help inform a future EU legislative framework. The Commission intends to roll out tools to give users more control over their data, in line with the EU's commitment to promoting data privacy and security.

Andreas Hartl, the Head of Division Strategy Artificial Intelligence, Data Economy and Blockchain, German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, will also be contributing to the discussion. The Center for Data Innovation will discuss various stakeholders' views on these proposals, providing insight into the diverse perspectives surrounding the EU's data strategy.

The EU's approach to data will follow a "European way," but details have not been specified. The discussion on the EU's data strategy will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to voice their opinions and contribute to the development of the EU's data strategy.
