EU's Single Strategic Endeavor for Eco-friendly Magnesium Metal Manufacture
Verde Magnesium Advances Towards Sustainable Magnesium Production
Verde Magnesium, a pioneering company in the magnesium industry, is making significant strides towards the construction of an initial pilot plant with a capacity of up to 500 tons per year. The plant, targeted for commissioning in late 2026/early 2027, marks a significant step towards Europe's Magnesium autonomy.
The company's efforts are not limited to the pilot plant. Preparations for restarting the existing quarry in 2026 are underway, and Verde Magnesium is also working diligently to refine the ore preparation process to maximize the unique properties of the brucite deposit.
The development of the pilot plant has received support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), with planned commissioning in 2025. This support underscores the importance of Verde Magnesium's mission to produce magnesium with a low carbon footprint.
In fact, Verde Magnesium has already achieved a notable feat by successfully producing Magnesium metal with a purity of 99.9% and a carbon footprint of 1-3 tons of CO2 per ton of Magnesium. Further decreases in the carbon footprint are possible, a testament to the company's commitment to sustainability.
Pre-certification with a Tier I EU automotive supplier has begun, using ingots produced during Verde Magnesium's pilot industrial tests. This is a significant step towards commercialisation, as the company aims to set new standards for sustainability and efficiency in the magnesium industry.
The company's efforts extend beyond magnesium production. Valuable by-products such as Al-Mg spinel, Calcium Aluminate, which can help industries such as cement, steel, and refractories meet their decarbonization targets, have also been produced.
Looking ahead, Verde Magnesium plans to ramp up its production capacity. By 2030, the company aims to produce 30,000 tons per year, with a potential increase to 90,000 tons per year by 2036. However, these plans are subject to positive feedback from the market, support from clients, and relevant authorities.
In addition to its focus on production, Verde Magnesium is also committed to environmental and social responsibility. The company has completed a scoping study addressing the environmental and social aspects of their integrated mining and smelting operations. A full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ERM UK and Romania) and independent Life Cycle Assessment (DLR Institute Germany) are also being undertaken.
Verde Magnesium's efforts have not gone unnoticed. The company has been awarded the status of Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act by the European Commission (EC), making it the EU's Sole Strategic Project for Magnesium Metal Production to date.
As Verde Magnesium moves forward, it is clear that the company is not just aiming to restore Europe's Magnesium autonomy, but also to set new standards for sustainability and efficiency in the industry.
