Schlosslichtspiele Karlsruhe 2025 Transforms City into a Stage for Art, Science, and Urban Life

Get ready for a dazzling spectacle as the Schlosslichtspiele Karlsruhe returns for its 11th edition from August 14 to September 14, 2025. This four-week light festival will transform the entire city center of Karlsruhe into a stage for media art, illuminations, and luminous events, attracting over two million visitors since its inception [1].

The main highlight of this year's event is the theme "The Shining Lights of Science," celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Artists will focus on showcasing KIT's achievements and fields of research, embedding scientific themes creatively into the light projections [1][3][5].

The festival kicks off on August 14, 2025 at 18:00 at KIT with a special 10-minute feature called "Science for Impact" by the Spanish artist group "Los Romeras," who have previously exhibited at Schlosslichtspiele. This film artistically illustrates KIT’s research diversity using the palace façade interactively, such as transforming windows into waterfalls and solar fire effects behind the main entrance [3].

Key KIT research fields highlighted in the projections include energy, climate, environment, information systems, particle physics, health technologies, materials science, mobility systems, and human-technology interaction [3].

In addition to the main event at Karlsruhe Castle, the city center will feature further artworks, including three shows that are winners of the international BBBank-Award. Hungarian artist group Maxin10sity will present a walk-through light and sound installation. The castle serves as a living canvas for these captivating light and sound installations [2].

The festival's grand finale takes place on September 1, 2025. In honour of the International Day of Peace, there will be a live broadcast to Ukraine. Dennis Siering will transform antifascist protest songs into artificial bird song in the castle garden, potentially inspiring real birds as well [4].

Visitors to the Schlosslichtspiele Karlsruhe will be immersed in new worlds through the light and sound installations, making it a must-see event for art and science enthusiasts alike. Admission to the festival is free, supported by strong partners like BBBank and dm [2].

Join us in August and September 2025 as we celebrate the radiant fusion of art, science, and urban life at the Schlosslichtspiele Karlsruhe.
