Evolutionary Movements in International Electric Vehicle Industries During Week 10

In the rapidly evolving world of electric vehicles (EVs), Australia took significant strides forward in 2022. The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) published a comprehensive report, "Australian Electric Vehicle Industry Recap 2022," detailing the major EV moments, charging infrastructure development, and policy achievements of the year.

The report delved into the adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) across the 16 largest national EV markets and 48 metropolitan regions with the highest BEV and PHEV shares and registrations. The findings underscored the growing support for EVs at all levels of government, as Australia embraces the shift towards a more sustainable future.

The consensus among stakeholders is that EVs are pivotal for Australia to achieve its climate goals and reduce its reliance on uncertain and costly international fuel sources. This sentiment echoes the global trend, as Europe, in 2021, became the second-largest market for BEVs and PHEVs, with a staggering 66% increase in sales compared to the previous year, totaling 2.3 million vehicles.

The report also shed light on the top 10 national markets with the most public chargers installed in 2021 and public charger deployment at the local level. Notably, the EU's stringent CO2 emission standards led automakers to comply with stricter regulations, resulting in a reduction of average emissions to 113 g/km in 2021.

In Europe, the car manufacturers with the highest electric car sales in 2021 were Volkswagen, followed by Tesla and other German brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Volkswagen, in particular, led the market, especially in Germany, where electric vehicle sales surged significantly to 681,410 units that year.

The ICCT also shared a report titled "Battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle uptake in European cities," further underscoring the growing importance of EVs in the global automotive industry. As Australia continues to make strides in the EV sector, the future looks promising for a cleaner, more sustainable transportation landscape.
