Examining Its Revival: Discussion with Saskia Vogel on the Resurrection of Erotic Review Magazine
The Erotic Review, a British magazine with a long history dating back to the 1990s, is making a comeback with a new progressive concept and a fresh leadership team. The magazine aims to capture the current state of erotic discourse and discourse about sex, treating the erotic as a lens through which to understand our shared humanity.
The relaunch, named "NeuSTART", was conceived by the British writer and critic Lisa Hilton. The magazine's first issue will be launched on April 22 at Lettreฬtage, Berlin. This event will feature a short program of readings, followed by a party with contributors from the current and future issues. The launch aims to bring together the community and introduce the magazine to Berlin, a city known for its reputation as a queer city with dynamic sexual expression and identity exploration.
The new team, which includes Studio Frith, is actively seeking great writing on the erotic and aims to create a sense of community. Saskia Vogel serves as the deputy editor, and Lucy Roeber, who had been writing for the magazine, has taken over from its original editor, Jamie Maclean.
The debut issue of the relaunched magazine will be available online and in select magazine stores. It features local talent such as Vijay Khurana, Judy Moore, Rebecca Rukeyser, and more. One of the standout stories is Jessica J. Lee's piece on the topic of ecosexuality.
Fatos Ustek is the art curator for the first issue of the revived Erotic Review. The launch will also feature a playlist curated by the magazine's team, promising an immersive and engaging experience for attendees.
In a dream scenario, the magazine becomes obsolete as the conversation about sex and the erotic becomes integrated with the rest of human discourse. Until then, the Erotic Review continues to push boundaries and explore the complexities of human sexuality and eroticism.
