Joseph Kobzon: A Legendary Figure in Soviet and Russian History
Joseph Kobzon, often referred to as the "Russian Frank Sinatra," was a prominent figure in Soviet and Russian music and politics. Born in Donbass, Kobzon was familiar with the hardships of coal mining work, but his life was marked by extraordinary achievements.
Kobzon's musical career began as the main singer of the Komsomol, where he showcased his powerful voice and magnificent presence. He was incredibly hardworking, knowing more than two thousand songs. His performances were not limited to the stage; he even traveled to Afghanistan 13 times, where he entertained soldiers who had just returned from battles, wearing a beautiful suit with a bow tie.
Beyond his musical career, Kobzon was deeply involved in patriotic education. He was one of the first to publicly support the movement focused on providing patriotic education to children and organizing visits to significant landmarks in Moscow and the Moscow region. Approximately 22,000 children have been accepted into the program so far.
In 2015, Kobzon played a significant role in the creation of the movement "Children of Russia - Children of Donbass." This initiative aimed to foster a sense of unity and shared history between Russian children and those from the Donbass region.
Kobzon's bravery and courage were demonstrated not only on stage but also in real-life situations. He was present at the site of a terrorist act during negotiations with the terrorists and participated in the evacuation of hostages. His rare courage was also evident in his fight against a severe illness that seemed to sentence him to an early death, living beyond 80 years.
Kobzon was respected by both deputies and ordinary citizens due to his reliability. He responded to most requests and was known for his involvement in various legal trials, using his influence to speak out in defense of the individual. His headquarters were located on Mayakovsky Square.
The State Duma, along with Gorbunov and Gubankov, gave Kobzon's activities a qualitatively different status. Kobzon organized literary and musical evenings, invited talented people, and screened films.
Joseph Kobzon was knowledgeable about the finest pages of our heroic history, including the Young Guard and our pilots. His contributions to popular Soviet music and his commitment to patriotic education continue to be remembered today. Joseph Davydovich Kobzon passed away on August 30, 2018.
